AchievementsI volunteered for 2 years at the Central Manchester University Hospitals Foundation Trust, I have also represented the CMFT Volunteer Services at open day events for students and members of the community and fund raising. This has helped me to develop my inter-personal skills.
I spent two weeks shadowing health professionals at the Coast Provincial General Hospital. Here, I obtained first-hand experience of medical practice in East Africa, where there is tremendous pressure on resources. I was able to make use of my bi-lingual skills.
I volunteered at local children’s home in Kenya. Most of the children were abandoned and lacked confidence, I quickly became a role model and thoroughly enjoyed the responsibility of influencing the children to develop positive attitudes about themselves.
I have stayed in touch with the children I met there and intend to do some fund-raising for them in the future.
I received a Special Award from the Dor Foundation for my participation and fund-raising for disabled children in Kenya. The foundation helps rehabilitation of special needs children.
I found mentoring to be my strength and something I thoroughly enjoyed after having experienced personal traumas of my own. I decided to mentor disadvantaged young people in my community who have been effected by premature tragic bereavement, particularly knife crime which is on an all-time high in the UK.
I am also very passionate about autism awareness as my younger brother received late diagnosis.
The achievement I am proudest of is setting up my own business producing and retailing Swahili Creole cooking pastes and spices. I look forward to focusing on this venture during summer.
